The 10:30 a.m. slot in Studio III at STEPS, Tuesday through Saturday, has long been reserved for an elegant taskmaster, Wilhelm (Willie) Burmann. His class is fast-paced, extremely difficult, and packed with pros -- in particular the men from City Ballet. Willie is demanding in the best sense of the word, but don't let that old school demeanor scare you. Just do your best, following proper classroom etiquette, and you won't be singled out in a negative way. Underneath, Willie is an old softy who adores his students. In return, his regulars are positively devoted to him. A warning to newcomers, however: He sets the combinations in a rapid-fire German accent and never repeats himself. This can be unnerving at first but it definitely makes you pay attention. Just be sure you're wide awake and somewhat warmed up before attempting to take Willie!
