 The Broadway Dance
Center
The Broadway Dance Center,
at 221
West 57th Street
over the Hard Rock Cafe, is one of the city's
most popular training grounds -- particularly
with the Broadway Gypsy crowd. I love the fact
that the studios are on separate floors so that
music from a jazz or tap class doesn't filter in
during a ballet class or vice versa.
Teachers
tend to stress audition tips and tricks. There is
no summer intensive for young people, but
children are allowed in regular classes with
permission of the director and instructors. Just
give a call ahead of time and let everyone know
what your plans are and what ages your students
are.
Visit
BDC's impressive and informative Web Site at
www.broadwaydancecenter.com for everything you need to
know, including biographies of all the teachers,
constantly updated class schedules and
information on BDC's two retail shops.
February 2005
Update...
In my NYDS column called
"Where to Dance," posted in April of 1997, I
talked about the evolution of the big studios in NYC, including
BDC. Also, please visit my
March 2005
column for news about the 20th anniversary of BDC and a link to
an excellent history of the studio.
Broadway Dance Center now has an
extensive children's program and a summer intensive.
The big news at BDC is the "Club
Card." It's free, and you need one in order to take class. You
can get one here.
