DOUG
SCHULTZ
New York City boasts a
talented cadre of accompanists who play live for dance
classes at studios all over town. One of my favorite pianists
is Doug Schultz. He gets the tempi just right and he has a
vast repertoire of classics, many from ballets and operas. He
can also improvise and play jazz and ragtime when
appropriate.
However, he doesn't abuse the privilege as do
some ivory ticklers who seem more interested in showing off
or simply amusing themselves than in serving the dancers' and
teachers' needs. (They shall remain nameless.) When the music
fits the movement style, the work is so much easier.
Incidentally, Doug is married to ballerina Gretchen Gunther
who teaches young people at STEPS and Alvin Ailey. Maybe that
partly accounts for his knowledge of which selection will
suit the combination at hand.
In any case, pick a teacher and
a level from the list below and treat yourself to an
inspiring hour-and-a-half of Mendelsohhn, Minkus, Mozart and
more!
