SIMON
DOW
Simon Dow, one of NYC's most popular teachers, has the 10-11:30 a.m. slot at
STEPS in Studio II Monday through Friday. Arrive early to
sign in. No more than 70 people are allowed in class, and
his fill up very fast. He's a favorite with the pros because
he gives a no-frills barre with lots of repetition,
beginning slowly in first position and picking up speed
with the combinations from fifth. The emphasis is on
absolutely square placement -- a la the legendary Maggie
Black, whose classes Simon used to frequent.
He is far
from a Maggie clone, however. He brings to his teaching
his own gentlemanly manner, infused not a little with a
Zen-like sense of peace and focus. (That he also teaches
Yoga is no surprise.) As for his center, expect lovely and
logical choreography that is eminently musical. Also,
many dancers who have rehearsal or performance commitments leave right after the barre -- as do most of
the retired dancers -- so there's usually enough room to
maneuver. Overall, this is a New York dance experience not to
be missed. See you there!
