A Dancer's
Manual, by Bobby Boling; don't leave home without it! Whether you're waiting an hour to be #78 to dance at an audition or sitting on the subway ride home with aching muscles, pull a copy of this encouraging little book out of your dance bag to lift your spirits anytime. Boling's book of advice is full of indispensable information for performing artists, sandwiched gracefully between inspirational quotes from great minds in an array of fields.
Why not let Aristotle remind you that "We are what we repeatedly do." as you head off to your 6th set of plies for the week. And when you are leaving an audition that didn't go as well as you'd hoped, let Thomas Edison's words, "I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward." encourage you to continue until you find that audition where the director loves you!
Yet Boling has no need to rely solely on others' words. He himself draws on his wide range of experiences as a student, dancer, choreographer, teacher and producer in his career, to offer anecdotes to learn from and advice to heed, in a friendly and simple writing style. Though he occasionally offers excessively general advice on situations that may differ greatly from one dancer to another, Boling frequently has good insights and tips about the 'biz'.
A Dancer's Manual, includes important information on nearly every aspect of a dancer's career, including: taking class, auditioning, rehearsing, performing, contracts, injuries and career transitions. The arts are evolving so quickly, however, that it is a good idea to double check information about unions and other specific business areas with another, more recent, source, such as the web. (Boling's facts about unions are already outdated.)
Still the book is sure to give a dancer that is fairly new to the business some solid
and very helpful information. In addition, it is certain to motivate a dancer of any status in his or her pursuit for greatness!
