Working
In Mexico
I would like to be very technical
and specific in this particular article simply because it can mean the difference between
a terrific experience and a nightmare. First, always remember you are in a foreign
country. Many dancers go to Mexico with the "I'm an American" attitude. This
does not work in any country and you would never stand for it if a foreigner did it to
you. It is by their grace you're allowed to work in their country.
Secondly, your producer will be
responsible for your work visa. As you might remember from the opening story, this is very
important. It states simply that you may work in Mexico for a certain amount of time and
in a certain capacity. The reason I am saying this is because there is an abundance of
work in Mexico for Americans. Though you've heard some negative points, many Mexicans love
Americans and like to use them for fashion shows, modeling jobs, choreography and
commercials. If you are going to get involved in extra work (and if you can you should),
make sure you've discussed it with your producer. The producer is responsible for you
while you're are working under the work visa they paid for.
When I worked in Mexico I had
the approval of my producer and went on to do many modeling jobs. I even had the chance to
choreograph for Televisa, (the equivalent to ABC). The experience was wonderful and the
new people I met added to that experience. Of course, the extra bucks weren't so bad
either.
Now to the show at hand. Most
of your rehearsals will be held in the States for obvious economic reasons, but you will
usually get a week of rehearsals on the stage. The productions are very similar to a Vegas
lounge show, they are fast paced flashy dance numbers separating a couple of Mexican
variety acts, usually a singer, comedian or magician.
Glitzy costumes, bright lights
and a combination of contemporary and Mexican music fill a show rarely longer than two
hours in length. The work week is six nights, one show a night, one day off a week, but
can be increased at the producers discretion. ASK AHEAD OF TIME. The show is also a little
later than what you might be used to, sometimes starting at 9:00 or 10:00 PM.
I have worked two different
nightclubs in Mexico City and one in Acapulco and I've always found them to be just as
professional as in the United States. Remember, the pace is slower and the culture is
different. Stay calm, meet people halfway and keep a professional business attitude and it
will ensure a great time.
Lifestyle
Mexico City, Acapulco,
Cancun, Cozumel or Mazatlan, wherever you travel to in Mexico it is exciting, colorful and
very romantic. The festive spirit of the people, restaurants on the beach, mariachis
playing, you just can't beat it. Although most dance shows will be performing in Mexico
City or Acapulco, a short plane flight can take you almost anywhere in the country. Now
before the romantic in me completely takes over, let's talk practically.
