ELENA
KUNIKOVA
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:30 in Studio II at STEPS
belong to Kunikova, a quintessential Russian ballerina trained in
the Vaganova tradition in St. Petersburg.
As one student said to
me in the dressing room the other day, it's worth the price of
the class just to watch Kunikova demonstrate. She was born to dance,
with a slight and supple body plus the soul of an artist. She can
toss off multiple pirouettes even when she's marking. A simple
port de bras becomes the most eloquent of gestures when she
performs it.
She sets beautiful adagios, often with what she
herself calls "quaint charm." (Think "Le Pas de
Quatre.") A caveat, however: If you are not used to
coordinating arms and head from the very first plie, you may be a
bit flustered at the beginning. Don't panic. Before long, you'll
be comfortable with what's expected.
Also, Kunikova loves to
nurture promising young people. There is always a group of
"her girls" in class, the ones she coaches
privately. If you're a teen, she may ask your name and give you
special corrections. (Pay attention. She really know what she's
talking about.) And if you're going to be in town for any length
of time, consider arranging for coaching. She knows all the
variations and passes them on with strict attention to detail,
right down the movement of the fingers. Don't pass up the chance
to learn the nuances and the artistry that you could never pick
up from a mere video.
