We thought that sharing part of Gavin's brochure with you will help you gain a better understanding of his interesting field and practice:

How can counseling help me?
A qualified counselor can assess and determine the cause of any problems that you may have. The counselor's goal is to apply the necessary intervention program.  Remember that the earlier you attack the cause of a problem the quicker you can get on with your dancing. Don’t let your concerns build up, as it becomes more difficult to solve and may have a greater impact on your dancing.

What types of things can counseling help you with?
Counseling sessions are aimed at assisting you as a performer to achieve your highest level of performance. There are three main areas which you may require assistance with. These include: 1) Mental Skills Training (e.g., performance anxiety, imagery / visualization training, lack of motivation, concentration and focusing, relaxation, goal setting, increasing your readiness to perform, injury rehabilitation); 2) Personal Counseling (e.g., sadness / depression. injury rehabilitation, interpersonal issues, body image, food issues, conflicts at home / work / dance); 3) Group Work (e.g., increasing group cohesion).

What will the counselor do?
At your first visit you will be given a thorough and personalized assessment. This usually takes the form of an interview. The initial interview is generally 1 hour and allows the counselor to gain the necessary information about your background, ambitions, and any concerns you may have. Following the assessment, an individualized plan will be  created for you, and in some instances you will be provided with exercises and activities for you to do at home.

What will result from the interview?
1) Decide that the initial interview itself has clarified your concerns and that you need no further counseling; 2) Decide that further appointments are needed to explore the issues before reaching a decision; 3) Decide that short-term individual or group counseling is needed; 4) Decide that extended or specialized service elsewhere is needed, and identify specific resources for you to consider and pursue.
